When does the new Skwo: wech primary school open?

The students were due to move into the new school in January 2022, but that has now been delayed. A new date has not yet been set.

The new Skwo: wech primary school will ultimately not open after the Christmas holidays.

New Westminster School District Superintendent Karim Hahlaf broke the news to school trustees at the November 23 board meeting.

Hahlaf noted that the district faces supply chain issues related to COVID-19 – challenges that have been magnified by recent devastating flooding that hit the Fraser Valley and the interior.

“Now, with the recent flooding damaging the roads, we are not going to receive some of our pending supplies to open after the winter break,” he said.

The district is now working with its contractor, Heatherbrae Builders, to assess the situation, assess its impact on the teams’ ability to get the job done, and come up with a new schedule.

Hahlaf noted that the school had planned two days of distance learning, before and after the winter break, to facilitate the move to the new building; a similar plan will be adopted each time the move takes place, he said.

Hahlaf said he will return to the board and the public with a new timeline when this is sorted out.

“I think our audience and our community understand some of the challenges we face that were beyond our control,” he said.
