Architectural firm TSK Architects (TSK) and international construction consultancy Cumming Group (Cumming) are pleased to announce the completion of the O’Brien Middle School redesign project in Reno in conjunction with staff of the Washoe County School District (WCSD), the community and its partners. The new building at 5000 Silver Lake Road will solve the problem of overcrowding and has been expanded to accommodate a capacity of 1,400 students.

The new three-story building was built on the original sports grounds and has been redesigned to include 24 standard classrooms, 12 math/science labs, five flex labs and a culinary lab, six group/d team, three music rooms, two special education rooms and an art room. A new gymnasium, fitness room and weight room were also included in addition to a family resource center. TSK designed the building to meet energy efficiency standards with a geothermal heat exchange system and drought resistant landscaping. Given the limited site area available, the new building is designed to be more compact and use space more efficiently than other colleges in the district without reducing classroom and activity space.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the redesign of O’Brien Middle School in Reno,” said Windom Kimsey FAIA, LEED AP, President and CEO of TSK Architects. “Kevin Kemner has spent countless hours designing a building that reflects our commitment to excellence and the Washoe County School District‘s dedication to its students. This project is close to our hearts and would not have been possible without the collaboration of our partners. Congratulations to everyone involved and we look forward to hearing about the continued success of the students at O’Brien Middle School. »

Providing project management and owner representation services on behalf of the Washoe County School District, Cumming’s regional team of education experts oversaw the new construction of the 178,000 square foot college.

“Cumming is honored to be part of the team that has built a new school prototype for the Washoe County School District,” said Kristin Hillmer, Cumming’s principal. “The new O’Brien Middle School provides a much-needed upgrade for the growing community in the Stead area of Reno North Valleys.”

The O’Brien Middle School construction project was made possible by the passage of the Capital Funding Ballot Initiative in 2016. Prior to this expansion, the original facility did not allow students to sixth year to be in the same building as their seventh and eighth year. peers.
