The Sheriff’s Response to the VVS College Vaping Incident

Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to VVS Middle School on Tuesday after several students fell ill after smoking liquid through a vape pen.

One student was taken to hospital for evaluation.

Two other students were assessed at school.

Deputies say the exact number of students who have used the vape pen is unknown at this time.

The investigation into the contents of the vape pen and the circumstances surrounding the incident is still ongoing.

This is the third vaping incident in a local school district in recent weeks.

On February 2, several students at Clinton High School fell ill after smoking with a vape pen.

Three students were taken to hospital.

Two other students were assessed by school medical staff and were not hospitalized.

Oneida County Sheriff Rob Maciol says preliminary test results show the vape pens tested positive for the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as “THC,” the active ingredient in marijuana that produces the feeling of being “uplifted”.

Tests are still ongoing to determine what other substances may have been inside the enclosures.

Meanwhile, in December, a vaping incident at Oneida Herkimer Madison BOCES sent three students to the hospital.

School resource officials were notified by school officials that a student was having a reaction after smoking an unknown substance with a vape pen.

An investigation revealed that a total of four students had smoked with the vape pen and suffered reactions.
