ST MARYS — As the 2022-23 school year gets underway, the St. Marys area middle school is “full of energy” and has new projects in the works, principal Julie Boyer said.

Families enjoyed an open house at SMAMS on Aug. 31, where they were given a tour of the school and met with staff members, she said. There were also raffle baskets donated by parents and teachers.

New this year, there is now a Middle School Association (MSA).

“This is an opportunity for families to get involved in college events and make suggestions to improve our current system,” Boyer said. “Currently, we have 25 active members. “

Eighth-graders from SMAMS enjoyed a field trip to Camp Mountain Run in Penfield Sept. 15-16, Boyer noted, where they participated in kayaking, tie-ins and a variety of strength-building activities. team that occupied them.

These trips are important, Boyer noted, because they teach students important life skills like how to work in a team and leadership.

The college is also hosting a spaghetti dinner on Friday, October 7, with proceeds going to school-level events.

And, for the first time ever, SMAMS will be hosting a sleight of hand on Friday, October 28 from 4-6 p.m.

“Families are encouraged to join in the fun. Photos and a light meal will be offered,” Boyer said.
