Riverbend Elementary School is closed until Wednesday due to extensive flooding in the building.

Juneau School District Superintendent Bridget Weiss said a pipe near an exterior wall of the building burst over the weekend. By the time Monday arrived, there was a lot of water in the school.

“I would say probably two-thirds of the school was affected by water. So pretty important, ”Weiss said.

Weiss said the water had been sucked in and now it was time to wait for the waterlogged soils to dry out. She said it was too early to tell the extent of the damage.

The school district will reassess the damage on Wednesday and then decide if the school can open. If the school cannot open because of the damage, Weiss said the district will develop a back-up plan. She said she didn’t know what that shot would look like yet.

All schools in the district are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays due to weather conditions. Apart from Riverbend Elementary, they are expected to reopen on Wednesday.
