Redlands middle school teacher charged with sodomizing student


REDLANDS, Calif. — A Redlands middle school teacher was charged with sodomizing a male student for several years, but was released on bail pending arraignment in August, the county attorney’s office said Monday. of San Bernardino.

Joseph Michael Nardella, 53, of Highland was arrested on Friday but released on $500,000 bond, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Nardella was charged with two counts of buggery of a child under 16, two counts of buggery of a child under 18 and one count of continued sexual abuse – all felonies.

Nardella had “an ongoing sexual relationship with a student for approximately five years, from 2015 to 2021,” according to the prosecutor’s office. Meanwhile, Nardella was an 8th grade teacher at Clement Middle School in Redlands, the agency reported.

In a criminal complaint, prosecutors allege the continuing sexual assault charge includes Nardella unlawfully engaging “in three or more acts of substantial sexual conduct, …, and three and more lewd and lascivious acts ‘of'” a child under the age of 14….” Nardella lived with the boy and “had recurring access” to him, according to the complaint.

Nardella’s relationship to the victim has not been clarified by prosecutors.

The court denied a request from the prosecutor’s office to increase Nardella’s bond. He is due in court Aug. 10 in San Bernardino County Superior Court.
