A school safety official fired a gun near Millikan High School in Long Beach on Monday, September 27, officials said, but additional information about the incident was not immediately available.

The security guard unloaded his gun off campus near Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue, said Chris Eftychiou, spokesperson for the Long Beach Unified School District. It was not immediately clear who the officer was shooting at and if anyone had been injured.

Eftychiou said there was no indication that any students were injured in the incident which took place in a neighborhood where shootings and violent crime are rare. The hallway along Spring Street is usually busy with shoppers or students walking around after school in the afternoon.

Spring Street from Snowden to Palo Verde Avenues was closed by police in the afternoon. Dozens of students could be seen being held behind police gangs and others crowded around the scene.

A bullet hole was visible through the window in the backseat of a car.

Long Beach police were investigating, according to Eftychiou.

The Millikan High School campus is expected to be fully staffed and open to students on Tuesday, Eftychiou said.
