Opening of new JCPS elementary school delayed after building inspection fails

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Students and staff at a new JCPS elementary school will move to a temporary location while construction is complete.

According to a JCPS statement, the Wilkerson Elementary School building on Johnsontown Road failed a Louisville Metro government building inspection on Tuesday.

Failing the inspection means that students and staff will have to be moved to another location as the building gets its certificate of occupancy.

The district said it plans to reopen Watson Lane Elementary for students and staff to attend as a temporary home while construction of the new building is complete.

“This is extremely disappointing,” JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said in a statement. “The contractor assured us that the building would be finished on time. I apologize to the Wilkerson families for this unacceptable pause in their excitement about moving into a new building.

Watson Lane Elementary was previously closed at the end of the 2021-2022 school year, and students who attended elementary school were required to attend that school year.

Terri Scanlon lives near the construction site of the new school. She said she has been monitoring construction since it began in October 2020.

“The process, I mean they were very quick in tearing it down and building it,” Scanlon said.

Scanlon also said she has two children who attend the old Wilkerson Elementary. This school building was closed, with the new 82,532 square foot, $17 million school being built on land behind the old campus.

“This school has been around for a long time,” Scanlon said. “So it’s exciting to have a new school in our area. It was very sad that it closed. We have photos from when he was still standing. And then we took pictures of the construction.

“My kids loved Wilkerson,” Scanlon added. “They had amazing teachers there all along. They are still in contact with some of these teachers.“

The district said it expects to complete construction and pass certification in weeks, not months.
