Mountain View High School Volleyball Wins District Title

For Mountain View volleyball coach Laura Torres, Tuesday night’s victory over Fabens will be one she fondly remembers.

In 2002, as a Lobos player, Torres helped the program win a district title. In 2021, she coached the Lobos to a district title, defeating Fabens 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-15 to finish 13-1 in the district, one game ahead of San Elizario.

“These kids deserve the championship,” said Torres, who is in his fifth year as head coach of the Lobos. “They worked hard to make it happen. They kept believing and fighting. It feels good to be back in my high school and to win a championship with this group is amazing.”

The Lobos, who have eight seniors on the roster, won five late-season thrillers against San Elizario and Clint to help them claim the district title. Even Tuesday’s win wasn’t easy as Fabens fought the Lobos all night and didn’t make it easy.

“We’ve been waiting for this for four years,” said senior forward Jennifer Valdez, who has been in college for four years and is part of the successful women’s basketball program. “This team is just finding ways to win. We’ve won some great games this year and we believe in it.”

Valdez led the Lobos with 19 kills, 16 digs and 10 blocks in Tuesday’s win. Maddy Estrada had 22 assists, Kimber Maldonado had seven assists, Destiny Hernandez added 14 digs and Jema Padilla didn’t have huge numbers at the net but did manage a few key blocks at critical moments.

“It’s an incredible feeling to get this victory and secure the title,” said Estrada, who is starting on the basketball team and is a talented track athlete. “We had a great crowd here on senior night and that made it even more special. The crowd gave us a huge boost. We lost this third game, but we came together and played well to finish the game.

Now the Lobos are aiming to build on the district title and be successful in the playoffs. The bi-district round of playoffs will take place next Monday and Tuesday.

“As we went through the season and started winning against Fabens, against Clint, against San Elizario, I just started to see the potential of this team and the confidence in them just kept growing,” said Torres. “Our kids have great chemistry and they keep doing great things. I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”
