Planning for a new Cedar Hill Middle School continues with the third in a series of open house events at the Cedar Hill Road facility on Tuesday.
The school is classified as having a strong need for seismic works. Funding of $42.9 million for a replacement school was announced last July by the province.
The Greater Victoria School District is contributing an additional $3.6 million, bringing the total to $46.5 million.
Those attending the next open house will be invited to provide feedback on design elements and review preliminary floor plans and architectural renderings.
An open house held on March 3 focused on features such as accessibility, circulation and bike access.
Tuesday evening will be the last opportunity for the public to have their say on the design. The district said all inputs will be compiled and reviewed by the school board before final plans are submitted to the Department of Education for approval.
The Cedar Hill Middle School building was built in 1931 and is one of the oldest in the district. There have been several additions, the last in 1975. The building first housed the original Mount Douglas High School, then became Cedar Hill Junior Secondary and finally a middle school.
The project is expected to start this fall and end in the summer of 2025 with room for 575 students.
The Greater Victoria Local Shop Teacher Specialist Association has expressed concern that the carpentry shop has been dropped from plans for the new school due to the estimated cost of $500,000 to purchase and maintain it. an exhaust system.
The group said in a statement that removing the carpentry shop from the school would create inequity in the district: “We will be the only college not to offer carpentry shop exploration courses to our students”.
There will be an absence of basic skills with fundamental tools that could limit students’ ability to enter trades, the statement said.
The open house is held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium, 3910 Cedar Hill Rd.
