LAEF donates $18,000 to furnish elementary school sink spaces

The Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) was proud to donate $18,000 last week towards furnishing and decorating the elementary school’s new well spaces. With six elementary schools in the Los Alamitos Unified School District, each school will be able to spend $3,000 to transform a classroom into a comfortable, inviting space where students can reset and seek psychological support. Los Alamitos USD has three elementary school wellness counselors who will work in the well spaces and teach mental health lessons in every classroom – Stacy Eatmon in Los Alamitos and Weaver, Tina Heeren in McGaugh and Rossmoor and Priscilla Jara in Hopkinson and Lee.

The first step toward creating these spaces came in the spring, when a group of student ambassadors from Weaver Elementary School approached LAEF for a grant to create a “peaceful pod” in their media center. LAEF loved the idea of extending well spaces to elementary schools and partnered with students, with support from Advisor Lindsay El-Zein (of Embassy Consulting Services), Weaver Principal Dr. Todd Schmidt and parental design volunteer Tracy Hageman. Students visited the Well Space at Oak Middle School for inspiration. The Peaceful Pod has come together beautifully and will now expand to other schools with additional funding from LAEF.

During the February 2022 fundraising campaign for Los Al Kids, LAEF raised over $200,000 to redevelop and furnish a well space at Los Alamitos High School. Construction of the pit space began on September 6. Last year, LAEF donated $25,000 to support the salary of the college mental health counselor. In 2019-20, LAEF donated $60,000 for the construction of pit spaces at the two district colleges: Oak and McAuliffe. This is the sixth consecutive year that LAEF has made mental health funding a top priority.

This donation is made possible by LAEF’s main donor group: the Los Al Leadership Circle (LALC). Members of LALC are distinguished and important supporters who pledge to donate at least $1,000 annually to the visionary work of LAEF. To learn more, please visit
