FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – The leaders of Florence 1 school district had the chance to walk around the future home of Southside Middle School.
The entrepreneurs expect the school to be finished by next summer. The $ 40 million project is just one of many projects the district has planned.
âPeople always wonder why you came to Florence,â said Superintendent Dr. Richard O’Malley. âWell, it gave me the opportunity to start with a blank slate and build almost a whole new school district. “
O’Malley said they opened the new Southside High School shortly after taking office as superintendent.
At the time, the district had no money or plan for the school. But now the building is finally starting to take shape.
âThis building will house 1,200 students and will take Grade 6 students out of Southside Elementary schools and move them into Kindergarten to Grade 5. in our region on what arts education should look like, âsaid O’Malley.
All over Florence, the neighborhood is building, expanding and renovating schools.
West Florence High School is in the midst of a 40,000 square foot expansion.
While the former Southside High School will give South Florence High School the capacity to accommodate nearly 2,500 students.
âYou know this is part of a $ 25 million comprehensive renovation of all of our schools that a lot of people don’t even see. We’ll be highlighting in October what we’re doing in all of our schools, and I think that’s what we’re trying to do is build a school district and not an individual school, âO’Malley said. . .
