Carson City School District Provides Update on Arrest of Gunman in School Bus Incident | Carson City Nevada News

It came to the attention of the Carson City School District and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office on Thursday that a man with a holstered handgun entered a school bus with elementary school students from Bordewich Bray Primary School, and was later arrested for bullying minors and forcible confinement.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Michael Baxter, 54, of Carson City Thursday night.

On Friday morning, the District provided the following statement:

School administrators were notified Thursday that an unauthorized person of interest boarded a student-occupied school bus with a handgun holstered. The isolated incident happened on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at one of the elementary schools.

District officials and school administrators continue to cooperate with local authorities to provide information related to the incident.

The families of the students on the bus were not immediately notified of the incident so as not to impede the ability of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office to apprehend the person(s) of interest. After further investigation, school resource officers (SROs) and detectives then identified and apprehended the individual, who is not employed by the school district.

The case is still under investigation, including how the individual gained access to the bus. The school district handles employee issues internally.

Employee disciplinary matters are confidential. However, district officials diligently follow up on any allegation involving a district employee, with student safety a top priority. The District agrees to take all necessary steps to fully investigate allegations and to impose appropriate discipline on employees in the event of allegations, if proven.
