The Dripping Springs Independent School District kicked off the 2021-2022 school year with not one but two new elementary school buildings.
Walnut Springs Elementary School moved onto the freeway. 290 to sit next to Dripping Springs Middle School; its new building is now located at 113 Tiger Lane. Meanwhile, Cypress Springs Elementary School is a brand new school, established this year as DSISD’s first school in Driftwood and its fifth elementary school in total. Both campuses welcomed students for the first time on Tuesday, August 18, and are officially revealed to the public in a short series of ribbon cuts.
On Thursday, September 2, a dedication ceremony was held at Walnut Springs Elementary School with remarks from DSISD Superintendent, Dr. Holly Morris-Kuentz, Board Chair, Dr. Mary Jane Hetrick and Director of Walnut Springs, Melinda Gardner.
“Our vision for this school was to bring the inside in and get out the inside,” Gardner said. “We wanted a children’s museum atmosphere with the warm environment of old Walnut Springs. And I feel like we were able to achieve our vision.
The atmosphere of the school’s new campus fits perfectly with the Walnut Springs motto: “It’s time for us to shine,” Gardner said.
“A school is more than a building or a piece of architecture… it’s ultimately a place to nurture all of our futures – especially our children,” Gardner continued. “Seeing children entering for the first time with wonder and wonder was the perfect moment at the end of a long and very tiring year.”
The short program also included a musical performance by the group Dripping Springs Middle School and a recital of the school song by a group of fifth grade students from Walnut Springs.
After the ceremony, visitors were invited to tour the building. Areas highlighted included the cafeteria, library, gym, and STEAM lab. (STEAM is the abbreviation for science, technology, engineering, art, and math, used to mean an integrated approach to learning.)
The new buildings at Walnut Springs Elementary and Cypress Springs Elementary have both been included in the 2018 bond program, with construction starting in early summer 2020.
On Thursday, September 9, another dedication ceremony was held for Cypress Springs Elementary School, located at 11091 Darden Hill Rd.
